UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to open the annual pledging conference for the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) on Tuesday morning at UN Headquarters in New York, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters here on Monday.
Since it was established in 2006, CERF's annual funding target of 450 million U.S. dollars have remained unchanged, even as global humanitarian needs have quadrupled since then, he said.
With nearly 130 million people in need of assistance today, the secretary-general will call for an increase of the Fund's annual target to 1 billion U.S. dollars by 2018, he said.
The event will be chaired by Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien, he added.
