Israel rebukes Ecuador envoy over pro-Palestinian remark

Source: Xinhua   2016-12-05 00:43:02

JERUSALEM, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Israel's Foreign Ministry summoned Ecuador's envoy on Sunday to complain over the speech of Ecuadorian ambassador to the UN last week, allegedly comparing Israel's treatment of Palestinians to the Nazi regime.

Horacio Sevilla Borja made the controversial remarks during a session honoring the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

A statement by the ministry said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, also foreign minister, had instructed the ministry's deputy director-general for Central and South America, Modi Ephraim, to summon the Ecuadorian embassy's third secretary, Enrique Ponce, for an "urgent meeting."

Ephraim requested "clarifications" from Quito, stating that Israel "strongly rejects" Sevilla Borja's speech, "which was full of inaccuracies and historical distortions."

Ponce promised to report the matter to his office, the statement said.
