MANAMA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Bahrain authorities on Thursday announced a deadline for citizens to declare if they hold another nationality or they will face fines and even be stripped off their Bahraini citizenship.
Shaikh Ahmed bin Isa Al Khalifa, Interior Ministry Under-Secretary for nationality, passports and residence affairs, said Bahrainis have until Feb. 4 to disclose their second citizenship.
Violators could face a maximum fine of up to $27,000, or their Bahraini citizenship could be revoked.
"It is the decision of the Interior Minister to decide whether Bahrainis can be allowed to have dual citizenship," said Shaikh Ahmed during a press conference held on Thursday.
He said they do not have details of Bahrainis with dual citizenship and respected citizens who have nationalities either through birth or work.
He said in case a Bahraini opts for other nationalities, his Bahraini citizenship will be revoked.
He said a hotline and an email have been set up for citizens to report about dual citizenship.
