CAIRO, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's entry in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) mirrors its prestigious position and the growing trust from the international community, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said late Friday in a statement.

"The election to the UNHRC also signals Egypt's pioneering role in boosting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa and consolidating the principles of international law and respect of the UN Charter," the statement said.

Egypt was elected earlier on Friday to a temporary seat in the council for three years starting on Jan. 1, 2017.

"It's a new diplomatic victory, and a confirmation of the international appreciation for the Arab country," Abu Zeid added.

He voiced Egypt's appreciation of all countries that supported its election. "During the new mandate, our country will work hard to increase the council's effectiveness in the promotion and protection of human rights," he said.
