ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) has expressed deepest condolences to Cameroon over the train accident occurred on Friday.
Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, has sent her deepest condolences to the government and people of Cameroon, and particularly, to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the ghastly train accident, said an AU statement on Monday.
The derailment occurred in Eseka in the Central Region, while the train was moving from the capital city Yaounde to the economic capital Douala, said the statement.
The accident left around 80 people dead and 600 other passengers wounded.
The AU Commission Chairperson also wished speedy recovery to the injured, and supported the government's decision to carry out investigations, in order to ascertain the cause of the accident, and prevent further such incidents, said the statement.
The government of Cameroon declared national mourning, while providing assistance to the victims and families, recalled the statement.
The Chairperson reiterated AU's strong support and full solidarity to the government and people of Cameroon, noted the statement.
