Roundup: HK stocks close 0.38 pct lower

HONG KONG, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong stocks shrank on Wednesday, closing down 89.42 points, or 0.38 percent, to 23,304.97 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 23,234.67 and 23,445.56. Turnover totaled 54.5 billion HK dollars (about 7.02 billion U.S. dollars).

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index lost 78.98 points, or 0.81 percent, to close at 9,641.22.

Banking giant HSBC, which accounts for the largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, rose 0.09 percent to close at 59.05 HK dollars. Local bourse operator HKEX remained flat at 205.4 HK dollars.

As for other heavyweights, China Mobile dropped 0.48 percent to 92.85 HK dollars, Tencent climbed 0.19 percent to 212.8 HK dollars. Local airline Cathay Pacific moved up 0.58 percent to close at 10.5 HK dollars.

CKH Holdings, a powerful HK-based developer controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing, added 0.21 percent to 97.65 HK dollars.

Most mainland-based financial stocks dropped. Bank of China dropped 0.86 percent to 3.47 HK dollars. Bank of Communications sunk 0.51 percent to 5.82 HK dollars. China Construction Bank retreated 1.05 percent to 5.68 HK dollars. ICBC lost 1.26 percent to 4.71 HK dollars.

As for energy stocks, PetroChina dropped 0.19 percent to 5.38 HK dollars. CNOOC lost 0.19 percent to 10.46 HK dollars. Sinopec lost 1.37 percent to 5.75 HK dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals 7.76 HK dollars)
