BRASILIA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Brazil has launched an educational campaign to halve food waste by 2030, local news agency Agencia Brasil (EBC) reported on Tuesday.
With a slogan translated as "No Waste," the campaign was launched on World Food Day on Sunday.
It aims to educate people about the negative consequences of food waste on the environment, household finance and food security, via channels including digital media and social networks.
Citing figures from the World Resources Institute (WRI), the EBC report says Brazil is among the world's top 10 food wasters with some 41,000 tons of food dumped each year.
Mauricio Lopes, CEO of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), which launched the campaign in partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), told the agency, "avoiding waste at the consumption stage saves money and invaluable natural resources, and helps address food insecurity."
According to the FAO, as much as one-third of food produced worldwide gets lost or wasted in production and consumption systems, which is about 1.3 billion tons of food a year.
It's a huge loss in a world full of hunger, volatile food prices and social unrest.
