TOKYO, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday as the yen softened somewhat against the U.S. dollar, fears eased about a slump in oil prices and on receding concerns about China's economy.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended the day up 63.49 points, or 0.38 percent, from Monday at 16,963.61.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 4.01 points, or 0.30 percent, to close the day at 1,356.57.
Notable gainers by the close of play comprised fishery, agriculture and forestry, pulp and paper, and construction-linked issues.
Trading volume on the main section increased to 1,531.82 million shares from Monday's 1,527.03 million shares, with advancing issues outpacing declining ones by 1,272 to 564.
The day's turnover was 1,773.1 billion yen (17.04 billion U.S. dollars).
