RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Midfielder Willian is in doubt for Chelsea's home Premier League match against Leicester City on Saturday after the death of his mother.

Willian's former club Corinthians confirmed the news on their official Twitter account, offering condolences to the 28-year-old.

"We deeply regret Zeze's passing," the message said. "Our thoughts are with the entire family. May she rest in peace."

Zeze had battled a cancer for the past two years.

On Tuesday Willian scored in Brazil's 2-0 victory over Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier. After the match he spoke of the support he received from his teammates, who were aware that his mother was unwell.

"They gave me great support. All of them hugged me and that made me happy," Willian said after the match in the Andean city of Merida.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk player was told the news upon arriving in Canada on Wednesday for a connecting flight to England.

Globoesporte said he would return immediately to Sao Paulo to be with his family.
