UNDP, WWF Netherlands to support environment protection in Cuba

HAVANA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Wildlife Fund Netherlands (WWF Netherlands) Tuesday signed here an agreement to support environment protection in Cuba.

The document was signed by Myrta Kaulard, UNDP resident representative in Havana, and Kirsten Schuijt, executive director of WWF Netherlands.

The agreement covers areas such as ecosystem management, water resources, food security, sustainable agriculture, climate change, tourism, energy and transport.

Kaulard said that the new agreement is part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with the priority given to the adaptation to climate change, production and service sectors.

She added that both organizations are committed to strengthening their actions in Cuba to promote and support the sustainable management of natural resources and the preservation of natural heritages within the framework of the National Plan for Economic and Social Development until 2030, promoted by the Cuban government.

The World Wide Fund (WWF) is the largest international conservation organization of the civil society, with presence in over 100 countries and regions.

Its main objective is to achieve the harmonious coexistence of human beings with nature and slow down the degradation of the environment.

Since 2004, the WWF and the UNDP have been working together with Cuba's National System of Protected Areas.
