BERLIN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Eintracht Frankfurt have extended the contract with defender Marco Russ, the "Eagles" confirmed on Saturday.

The 31-year-old defender, who was diagnosed with a malignant tumour following a routine anti-doping test in May 2016, extended his current contract for another two years to stay with Eintracht Frankfurt until June 2019.

"I am pleased and proud to be able to continue playing here until 2019," Russ said. "I have to thank those responsible who have given me their trust despite my current situation."

Russ plays since 1996, including a short spell at Wolfsburg, for Eintracht Frankfurt where he made 256 competitive outings to score 22 goals overall.

"Marco is a role model with the right attitude and a home grown Frankfurt player," Frankfurt's sporting director Bruno Huebner said. "We wish him all the best for his recovery."

Eintracht Frankfurt sit on the 7th place of the Bundesliga standings after securing two wins and one defeat in three games.
