Mexico arrests wife of jailed drug lord

Source: Xinhua   2016-09-14 07:49:41

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Mexican authorities have arrested Clara Elena Laborin, also known as "La Senora" (The Mrs.), wife of jailed drug lord Hector Beltran Leyva, the Federal Police said on Tuesday.

Laborin, who allegedly runs organized crime rings in Mexico's once-famed Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, was captured on Monday in Hermosillo, capital of the northern state of Sonora, from where she managed the operation, said Omar Garcia, chief of the Federal Police investigative unit.

Laborin and one of her main operators were captured in possession of two kilos of cocaine and weapons, according to media reports.

"They are considered to be among the main generators of violence in Acapulco, Guerrero (state)," Garcia told reporters at a press conference.

As head of the Beltran Leyva drug trafficking ring until he was arrested in October 2014, her husband was among the 50 most-wanted criminals in the country, said Garcia.

In the 1990s, Hector, along with his brothers Arturo, Alfredo and Carlos, established the Beltran Leyva cartel, trafficking cocaine from South America to Mexico for the U.S. market.

The Beltran Leyvas later formed an alliance with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and his Sinaloa Cartel.
