NICOSIA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) special envoy on Cyprus Jane Holl Lute on Sunday briefed Cypriot community leaders on the details of a conference convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with the aim of restarting negotiations for a settlement of the long-standing Cyprus issue.

Lute held talks with Cyprus' President Nicos Anastasiades, representing the Greek Cypriot community, and Ersin Tatar, the leader of the Turkish Cypriots.

Government spokesman Kyriakos Kousios said in a statement that Lute informed Anastasiades "about the procedure and organizational matters" of the five-party conference that will be held in Geneva on April 27-29.

Parties of the conference, which will be chaired by Guterres, are the leaders of the two Cypriot communities and the so-called guarantor powers -- Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

The European Union asked to be present at the conference, as Cyprus is a member state.

The UN hopes to nudge the parties into agreeing on the resumption of Cyprus peace negotiations, which broke down during another conference in Switzerland in July 2017.

Greek Cypriots say that they will negotiate along the lines set down by numerous UN resolutions for a solution reuniting the divided island under a federal solution, while the Turkish Cypriot side has said it will negotiate for a two-state solution. Enditem
