HAVANA, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Cuba reported 1,489 new cases and 10 deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total infections to 170,854 and deaths to 1,180, the Ministry of Public Health said Tuesday.

A total of 8,662 Cubans are in the active stage of the virus, the highest number so far, said the ministry.

The western province of Mayabeque, which reported 70 new infections in the past day, has registered an incidence rate of 294.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in the country.

The ministry has extended the emergency vaccination program to include the entirety of Havana as well as the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Matanzas, Santiago de Cuba, and the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud, using the Cuban vaccine candidates Abdala and Soberana-02.

To date, 4.89 million doses of vaccine have been administered, and just over 2.24 million Cubans have received at least one shot. Enditem
