LINXIA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Linxia, a city in NW China's Gansu province, is home to many Majiayao cultural relics with glamorous painted pottery dating back to over 5,000 years.

The city is now holding an exhibition on painted pottery, which is part of the local government's increasing efforts on raising the awareness of the Majiayao culture.

When looking at the 80-some pieces of painted pottery on display, visitors will be exposed to the aesthetic and cultural heritage of people from the past. With its rich history, artistic presentation and sheer number, the Majiayao painted pottery has put the world in awe.

The Majiayao culture thrived in the Late Neolithic period and was first found by Swedish archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson in a village called Majiayao in the 1920s.

"The Majiayao culture played a very important role in early China's foreign exchanges", said Han Jianye, a history professor at Renmin University of China.
