India records highest daily spike of 184,372 new cases, Philippines reports 8,122 infections

HONG KONG, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Asia-Pacific countries are facing growing cases of the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday as India recorded the highest daily spike of 184,372 new cases, taking the total to 13,873,825.

Besides, 1,027 deaths were reported due to the pandemic, the highest figure of this year, taking the total death toll to 172,085, showed the data of the federal health ministry.

There are still 1,365,704 active cases in the country, while 12,336,036 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment.

The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 8,122 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 892,880.

The death toll climbed to 15,447 after 162 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

The virus spread has not slowed down, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an online briefing.

"We have not seen a decline in cases. The cases continue to increase. The average number of daily cases is still between 10,000 to 11,000 daily," she added.

The confirmed cases in Indonesia rose by 5,656 within one day to 1,583,182, with the death toll adding by 124 to 42,906, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, 5,747 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,431,892.

Malaysia reported 1,889 new infections, the health ministry said, bringing the national total to 365,829.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that six of the new cases are imported and with 1,883 being local transmissions.

Another eight more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 1,353.

Thailand reported 1,335 new cases, the biggest daily increase since the pandemic began, taking the total caseload to 35,910, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

A total of 1,326 of the new infections were domestic transmissions, with 789 being confirmed via tests at medical facilities and 537 via proactive tests, while nine others were imported cases, according to the CCSA.

Of the new confirmed domestic cases, 351 were detected in the capital Bangkok while 319 were reported in tourist destination Chiang Mai.

No new death was reported Wednesday, leaving the total death toll at 97.

South Korea reported 731 more cases, raising the total number of infections to 111,419.

Of the new cases, 245 were Seoul residents and 238 were people residing in Gyeonggi province.

Seventeen cases were imported, lifting the combined figure to 7,882.

Seven more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 1,782. Enditem
