River Plate beat Colon to step up title challenge

BUENOS AIRES, April 11 (Xinhua) -- River Plate inflicted Colon's first defeat of the Argentine Primera Division season with a 3-2 home victory over the Group A leaders on Sunday.

Lucas Beltran and Fabrizio Angileri netted either side of a Christian Bernardi strike, and Gonzalo Montiel made it 3-1 by converting a 73rd-minute penalty.

Rodrigo Aliendro gave the visitors a glimmer of hope with an 84th-minute goal but River held on to extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

Marcelo Gallardo's men are now second in the 13-team Group A standings, only five points behind Colon.

Earlier, a second-half strike from Nicolas Penailillo handed Union Santa Fe a 1-0 home win over Boca Juniors. The result saw Union leapfrog their rivals into third in the Group B standings.
