BERLIN, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Thanks to Baptiste Santamaria's own goal, newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Freiburg in Bundesliga on Friday.

Freiburg took control from the starting whistle, whereas hosts Bielefeld looked for counterattacks.

Although the hosts focused on fast breaks, Bielefeld created the first clear-cut chance, as Andreas Vogelsammer hammered an effort on target on 14 minutes.

Freiburg came close as well three minutes later after Roland Sallai's deflected shot missed the target.

Bielefeld defended well and kept Freiburg's defense busy as Fabian Klos tested Freiburg's goalkeeper, Florian Muller, from a tight angle in the 39th minute.

Just before halftime, Freiburg's Sallai was again in the thick of things but his shot got blocked as both sides took a goalless stalemate into the break.

After the restart, Freiburg handed over control while Arminia piled on the pace as Klos got denied at the back post before Voglsammer pulled wide from inside the box at the hour mark.

The hosts eventually took the lead with 68 minutes played as Freiburg wasn't able to clear a corner, allowing Masaza Okugawa to unleash an effort, which midfielder Santamaria deflected into the wrong goal.

Bielefeld thought they had made it two moments later, but it was a short-lived joy as Joakim Nilsson's goal was ruled offside.

The home side continued on the front foot and should have sealed the deal ahead of time but for all that Ritsu Doan as well as Voglsammer, squandered good chances in the closing stages.

With the result, Arminia Bielefeld jumps out of the relegation zone after moving from the 17th to the 14th spot. Meanwhile, Freiburg suffered its second straight defeat to stay in 10th place of the Bundesliga standings.

"We played very aggressive today and worked out the better chances. However, we cannot rest on this win. We have to stay focussed," said Bielefeld head coach Frank Kramer.

The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: leaders Bayern Munich host Union Berlin, Werder Bremen encounter runner up Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt clash with third-placed Wolfsburg, relegation-threatened Hertha Berlin face Borussia Monchengladbach and newcomers Stuttgart take on Borussia Dortmund.
