BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Elaborate and dynamic jumps, dazzling rotations, figure skating always takes the thrill and beauty to the extreme. And it is the most popular competition in the Winter Olympics.
Figure skating is the oldest event on the Winter Olympic program, having made its debut at the London Games in 1908.
The five Olympic disciplines are men's singles, women's singles, pairs skating, ice dance, and the team event. The figure skating event of the Beijing Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing competition zone.
Costumes have to show the theme and concept of the programmed choreography. Men traditionally wear trousers, while women can wear skirts and jumpsuits.
The blade of a figure skate has a groove on the bottom and a set of large, jagged teeth called a "toe pick" on the front. The toe picks are mainly used to help launch the skater into the air on take-off when performing jumps.
Pairs skating is the most dangerous discipline in figure skating. It requires multiple elements like spins, lifts, partner-assisted jumps, etc. Ice dance emphasizes the charm and expressiveness of dance.
The Chinese team is very skilled at pairs skating.
