MEXICO CITY, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Uruguayan Robert Siboldi has resigned as manager of Mexico's Cruz Azul following the club's elimination from the Liga MX Apertura tournament.

Cruz Azul won the first leg of their semifinal against Pumas UNAM 4-0 but suffered a defeat by the same margin in the return leg and were ousted by virtue of having finished below their rivals in the regular season.

"After analyzing what happened, I have decided to step aside. My players are professionals. They are not mediocre and they gave their best, but I cannot allow the values of me, my coaching staff and my players to be questioned," Siboldi said in a video posted on his Twitter account.

"I had a dream to win this tournament. In the semifinal we faced a great team and in the first leg we overcame them. In the second leg we were beaten. Anything can happen in 180 minutes of football. I want to make it clear that the approach in both games was to win," the 55-year-old added.

Siboldi, a former goalkeeper who was capped 34 times for Uruguay's national team, led Cruz Azul to 19 wins, seven draws and 11 losses after taking charge of the club in 2019. Enditem
