Afghan gun battle kills district police chief in western province

HERAT, Afghanistan, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- A district police chief lost his life and another sustained injury as clash erupted in Obe district of the western Herat province on Monday, provincial police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada said.

The clash, according to the official, flared up in the morning rush hour when the Taliban insurgents opened fire on the vehicle of Mohammad Rafiq, the police chief of Obe district, triggering gun battle that lasted for a while. As a result, Rafiq was killed and another policeman injured.

Taliban militants have yet to make comment.

Similar incident on a military vehicle left four soldiers injured in Herat city, the capital of the province on the same day, a local official said. Enditem
