TEHRAN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran national women's volleyball team captain Maedeh Borhani said in a recent FIVB interview that she hopes her team can get a medal at the Asian Championship.

The Iranian men's team, which has superstars like Saeid Marouf and Seyed Mousavi, is one of the leading powers of international volleyball. On the women's side, the country has also been progressing fast in recent years.

Iran's women team finished fifth in the 2018 Asian Club Championship in Kazakhstan, and Borhani was among the top four scorers of the tournament.

"I hope we can be among the top four teams in Asia. As a player I would like to go to the World Championships or the Olympic Games and get a medal at the Asian Championships," said Borhani.

Borhani made her international tournament debut in the 2009 Asian Club Championship. But the Iranian players face difficulties in the overseas leagues.

"The female Iranian players have to wear a hijab or a head cover. In the beginning, it was difficult because there were no leagues who accepted us. However, the Bulgarian federation opened its doors to Iranian women and confirmed our participation in their league," said Borhani.

Borhani then joined the Turkey league after her journey in Bulgaria. She called her overseas experience 'ground-breaking' for Iranian female athletes.

"It was a good challenge but also very important for any athlete to be exposed to bigger competitions," Borhani said. Enditem
