GABORONE, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- With only a few hours left before the parliamentary and local government elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Botswana has assured the southern African nation that it's all systems go.

Botswana will start the polls on Oct. 23 and more than 924,000 registered voters are expected to head to 2,296 polling stations across the 57 constituencies to partake in the country's 12th general elections since independence in 1966.

IEC public relations officer Osupile Maroba confirmed in an interview in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana on Monday that the commission and other relevant stakeholders have done everything to ensure smooth elections.

The ruling party and opposition parties will vie for 57 parliamentary seats. The party with the most seats will choose the president.

The IEC had conducted advance poll on October 19, which progressed well and concluded as scheduled except for a few stations that concluded voting in the early hours the following day.

Ballot boxes from the Oct. 19 early voting will only be counted with the rest after close of polls on Oct. 23.

Advance voting is strictly for poll staff such as counting officers, returning officers and the police.
