Hungarian and Russian swimmers stay atop at swimming World Cup in Budapest

BUDAPEST, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian swimmers also owned the second day of the FINA swimming World Cup here on Saturday, with Russian swimmers tailing them, just as the first day's performances.

Hungary won the gold medal in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay with the help of Katinka Hosszu and Zsuzsanna Jakabos with a time of 3:29.08, a split-second before the Russians (3:29.10) and the Dutch swimmers (3:29.43).

The gold for the men 200m butterfly also went to Hungary swimmer thanks to Bence Biczo, who swam under 1:58.67, beating Russian swimmer Daniil Pakhomov (1:58.69) and Czech competitor Sebastian Lunak (1:58.71).

Hosszu and Jakabos also were on top of the women 400m medley, Hosszu gaining the gold with 4:34.37, Jakabos getting the silvers (4:41.73), whereas Mireia Belmonte from Spain came third (4.41.81).

Jakabos also secured the silver in the women 200m freestyle (1:59.82) as she has been vanquished by Russian Veronika Andrusenko (1:59.58), Canadian Aly Ackman was third (2:00.77).

In the women 100m backstroke, Hosszu came "only" third (1:00.69), as the gold went to Kira Toussaint from the Netherlands (59.56), followed by Mariia Kameneva (59.86).

The longest final was the men 1,500m freestyle, it brought the victory of Florian Wellbrock with a time of 14:57.83, he triumphed over Czech rival Jan Micka (15:03.19), while Hungarian swimmer Gergely Gyurta came third (15:11.04).

Russians dominated one of the favorite final, the men 100m freestyle. Vladimir Morozov got the gold (47.99), Vladislav Grinev had the silver (48.57) and the bronze went to Japan's Katsuhiro Matsumoto (48.97).

Among the other finals, Michael Andrew won the men 200m medley, Dutch Ranomi Kromowidjojo triumphed in the women 50m butterfly, his compatriot Arno Kamminga won the men 50m breaststroke, while Ida Hulkko from Finland was the fastest in the women 100m breaststroke.

The competition's third and final day will take place on Sunday.
