LONDON, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Manchester City on Thursday confirmed that Ukrainian defender Oleksandr Zinchenko has signed a three-year contract extension to his current deal.

The new contract will keep Zinchenko at the club until the end of June 2024 and comes just a day after City's England defender Kyle Walker put pen to paper on a new two-year deal.

The 22-year-old joined the Premier League champions in 2016 and has made 43 appearances for the club in all competitions since then, although last season was his breakthrough year as he was first choice left back in 11 of City's last 12 games.

"It's difficult to express how happy I am to sign this deal. This club offers players everything they need to improve and develop, so being here for five more years is an honor," said Zinchenko on the club website.

"This season shows we are built for success. It was amazing to be involved in such a historic campaign and it's one I'll never forget, but I am now completely focused on the coming years and I know more good times are around the corner," he added,

The club's Director of Football Txiki Begiristain praised the young defender saying he has "shown over the past two seasons what a superb talent he is."

"Not only does he have a wonderful first touch and left-foot, he is a player completely focused on becoming the best footballer he can be."

"His attitude, personality and willingness to learn under Pep Guardiola has been outstanding and his improvement has been excellent," said Begiristain.
