JAKARTA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has taken steps to ratchet up the number of young tennis players and to boost their performance to vie in international sporting events, the country's tennis association said on Wednesday.

The association will next month stage a junior tennis championship in Palembang city, the capital of South Sumatra province in a bid to develop players' skills, August Ferry Raturandang, representative of the association, and director of the sporting event, said.

In addition, the MedcoEnergy Junior Champ-2 is slated to be held from July 24 to 28 in the Bukit Asam tennis court of Jakabaring Sport City compound, according to the association.

The event will include age categories of 12 years, 14 years and 16 years, Raturandang was quoted by Tempo media as saying.

The first MedcoEnergy Junior Champ-1 was held in West Java province in March, said Wawan Gunawan Abdul Kadir, chairman of tennis association for the province.

"This is in line with the vision of the association which puts priority on long-term development through junior championships," he said.
