BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The number of people adopting hanfu, a traditional clothing of Han ethnic group, in modern times is rising, according to China Daily.

Though lack official numbers proving the recent surge, people wearing hanfu on the street in everyday life become a common scene, and clubs dedicated to hanfu appreciation mushroom in universities across the country, the paper said Monday.

The prevalence of hanfu in China now is believed as a result of the "hanfu movement," which started about 16 years ago. Participants in the movement pursue the renaissance of traditional Chinese clothing, especially that worn by the Han ethnic group.

After disappeared for about 400 years, the modern adaptations of the ancient clothing has stirred up critics, including doubts on authenticity, some even link the fashion movement to nationalist movements.

Instead of having any political intention or motivation, young Chinese who choose hanfu as their daily fashion say that they wear it to show appreciation for their heritage and to feel a connection to their roots.

Many young people in China even want to promote the acceptance of hanfu as mainstream fashion.
