NANJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- A Sino-German team of scientists have invented a nano-ribbon aerogel material capable of maintaining super flexibility in a wide temperature range from minus 196 degrees Celsius to 1,000 degrees Celsius.

The aerogel team is led by Zhang Xuetong, a researcher at the Suzhou Institute of Nanotechnology and Nano Bionics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhang said the porous banded nanostructure material was ultra-light weighing 1.5 mg per cubic cm. It can maintain the structure without breaking down under multiple cyclic compression and even when it is immersed in liquid nitrogen.

"The aerogel has application prospects in aerospace, nuclear protection and other high-tech sectors," Zhang said.

The result of the research was published in the latest issue of the science journal Advanced Functional Materials.
