BUDAPEST, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The wee-hour flights between 00H00 and 05H00 will be banned from August 2019 at Budapest International Airport, the mayor of the Hungarian capital Istvan Tarlos said here on Tuesday.

"From August, a night flight ban will be introduced over Budapest between midnight and five in the morning, so that planes won't be able to take off or land during the deep sleep period," Tarlos declared at a press conference.

"There may be extraordinary situations when it will be necessary to provide airplanes with landing during that period," Tarlos added.

Traffic had already been low in the said period, limited to only 6 plane movements under the current legislation, but in reality the number was much higher due to the delays, Tarlos noted.

The issue of noise pollution at the airport has recently been at the heart of discussions, following complaints from the neighborhoods surrounding the Budapest International Airport.

Budapest Airport had a record year in 2018. It handled nearly 15 million passengers, up 13.5 percent from 2017.
