GARDEZ, Afghanistan, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Up to 20 people including policemen and civilians have been killed and 160 others injured on Tuesday in a suicide attack on a police center in Gardez city, capital of Afghanistan's eastern Paktia province, a local official said on condition of anonymity.

The explosion was followed by gunshots.

Hospital sources in Gardez confirmed that more than a dozen dead bodies and more than 100 injured persons including policemen and civilians have been taken to hospitals following the attack.

Six militants stormed the police training center in Gardez city, 100 km south of Kabul, at 9:40 a.m. local time, triggering two blasts and gun battle which is still going on.

Police have cordoned off the area and operations are underway to eliminate the attacking insurgents. The number of attackers was six, all equipped with suicide vests and light arms, according to security forces.
