TOKYO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares opened lower Tuesday on falls in U.S. shares overnight and the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 56.95 points, or 0.30 percent, from Monday to 18,834.08.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 6.93 points, or 0.46 percent, to 1,507.70.
Decliners were led by machinery, electric power and gas, bank and mining issues.
