OUAGADOUGOU, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Burkina Faso awarded Oberthur Technologies, French digital security company, over 3 million vehicle registration cards and driving licenses production contract valued over 15 billion CFA Francs in an international bid, official source on Wednesday said.
Government Information Service (SIG) disclosed the agreement to that effect which has been signed in Paris by Burkina Faso's Minister of Transport, Urban Mobility and Road Safety, Mr. Souleymane Soulama, and the general director of Oberthur Technologies, Mr. Christophe Fontaine.
The expected vehicle registration cards and driving licenses will be based on the leading technology Lasink and will have a ten year service life.
Burkina faso will then be the first African country to benefit from the technology which should enable more traceability likely to leverage taxes growth in the country.
"Today, the treasury loses a lot of money due to counterfeited driving licenses and vehicle registration cards in circulation," Soulama said in a release.
He added that accurate communication strategy will be conducted so as to sensitize Burkina Faso population on the new measures taken by the government.
