DAVAO CITY, the Philippines, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A moderate magnitude 5.1 quake rattled parts of southern Philippines on Sunday morning, state seismologists said.
The tectonic quake which hit around 9:19 a.m. local time, had an epicenter some 22 km east of Tandag City, in Mindanao's Surigao del Sur province at a depth of 28 km, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The U.S. Geological Survey pegged the temblor at magnitude 5.3.
Phivolcs said no damage was expected but there will be aftershocks.
The Philippines sits in the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates collide, causing frequent earthquake and volcanic activity.
Last February, a portion of the Philippine Fault moved, generating a magnitude 6.7 quake that killed seven people and injured more than 120 in the southern city of Surigao.
