LISBON, April 5 (Xinhua) -- A couple in Viseu, 290 km north of Portugal's capital Lisbon, were detained on Wednesday on suspicion of trafficking human beings for slavery and labor exploitation, judiciary police revealed.
"The couple exploited a man, of foreign nationality, of 54 years of age, for around six years, in domestic work and in agriculture, who received no pay and was living in degrading, inhumane conditions with limited freedom," according to a statement.
Police managed to rescue the victim, who was received by a non-governmental organization offering support for victims of trafficking, and collected vital clues for the charges.
The couple detained, aged 54 and 57, have attended their first judicial interrogation and have been ordered to turn up periodically at the local police station.
