French investigators clear Opel of using defeat device

PARIS, March 20 (Xinhua) -- French investigators into Opel possible emission fraud decided to drop the probe due to the lack of evidence, France's finance ministry said on Monday.

The country's consumer fraud agency has closed its investigation into Opel over possible emission cheating, according to the ministry.

"The elements, which had been collected and analyzed, have not revealed facts constituting an infraction of fraud," it said.

However, tests made by Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) have found poof of possible emissions fraud in Fiat, Renault, Peugeot-Citroen and Volkswagen cars sold in France, it added.

Investigations into other auto manufacturers are still underway after emissions cheating at Europe's leading car maker Volkswagen were discovered in 2015.
