MANILA, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 students were killed while 20 others were injured on Monday when a bus they were riding in rammed into an electrical post in central Philippines, police have said.

Police said the students, numbering about 50, were on a research field trip when the accident happened around 8:50 a.m. on Monday in Tanay town in the province of Rizal to the east of capital city of Manila.

Police said 10 of the passengers of the bus, owned by the Panda Coach Tours and Transport Inc with plate number TXS 325, died on the spot. The driver of the bus was reportedly seriously injured.

Four others died while being treated at the Rizal Provincial Hospital in Morong town.

The students - all from the Beslink College of the Philippines in Novaliches, Quezon City - were on their way to a resort in Rizal, as part of the school's National Service Training Program.

Carlos Inofre, Tanay's disaster risk reduction and management officer, said the bus lost its break and rammed the electric post thereafter. "The bus was coming from a higher ground when it lost its brakes," said Inofre.
