Winter Universiade ends with joy in Almaty

ALMATY, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The 28th Winter Universiade attracting more than 50 countries and regions came to a joyous close here on Wednesday night after 12 days of competitions.

A total of 255 medals were awarded, split among 25 countries and regions. Russia finished atop the medal table, with 71 medals including 29 golds, almost a double than its closest chaser, Kazakhstan, which grabbed 36 medals including 11 golds.

South Korea finished third with 21 medals, including 11 golds.

China ranked sixth with 10 medals, collecting four golds, four silvers and two bronzes. All the medals came from freestyle aerials and short track speed skating.

With 119 student-athletes, China's delegation was among the most numerous at the 28th Winter Universiade.

Oleg Matytsin, president of the International University Sports Federation, defined the Universiade "among the best in the history."

"Almaty gives us a top level of competition these days," said Matytsin. "It is the unique magical atmosphere here which makes the Universiade Almaty really special."

"Let me congratulate all athletes and all of us with the fantastic Universiade in Almaty. I look forward to see you in Krasnoyarsk Russia in 2019," added Matytsin.

The 29th version of the Winter Universiade will be held in Krasnoyarsk of Russia in 2019.
