TIRANA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Albanian authorities are on high alert and preparing a plan to prevent the approaching spread of bird flu, Albanian agriculture minister Edmond Panariti declared Monday.
Currently, bird flu cases are being reported in the neighboring countries of Greece, Macedonia, Croatia and other Balkan countries, while there are high risks it could spread to Albania.
To this end, Panariti said the Albanian authorities were doing everything possible to prevent it.
The only way to efficiently prevent the advance of this flu in Albania is through disinfection and applying the most advanced methods in breeding technology, Panariti said.
Bird flu is caused by type A influenza, which can affect several species of domestic and wild birds, causing a high rate of mortality.
The Albanian ministry of agriculture is imposing strict legal restrictions and controls on the movement of birds and chicken and their products in the territory of Albania, the ministry informed in a press release.
Panariti made these statements while inspecting a chicken farm in Kavaja, central Albania, where he talked about identifying measures to be taken in order to prevent the transmission of bird flu in the country.
However, according to him, the companies dealing with the breeding and sale of birds here were taking rigorous measures to prevent the virus from spreading. Enditem
