Floods in southern Thailand kills 6, disrupts transport

BANGKOK, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Rare downpours in January have killed six people in nine southern provinces of Thailand until Friday and also cut roads, railways there and forced an local airport to close.

Regularly, January is a month of dry season in Thailand and also high season for beach and islands in the south.

Airport of Thailand's southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat is closed for two days from Friday as its runway was flooded, which resulted a plane from Bangkok to fly back on Friday morning.

Many roads and public spaces in Nakhon Si Thamarat provinces were also flooded.

Railway services on the main line linking Thailand to Malaysia have been suspended because of the flood.

From January 1 to now, we found floods in 9 southern provinces, including Phatthalung, Narathiwat, Yala, Songkhla, Pattani, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Chumphon and 6 were killed in accidents caused by the flooding, said Chatchai Promlert, Director - General of Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Chatchai said the unreasonable rain may last Sunday and he had asked officials of 15 provinces to get prepared for potential flood and and mudflow.
