TOKYO, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Nikkei index of Tokyo shares closed the morning session higher on Wednesday, hitting an intraday high for this year, as U.S. shares hit record highs overnight and the yen depreciated against the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 28.27 points, or 0.15 percent, from Tuesday to 19,522.80.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 0.01 points to 1,552.35.
Gainers were led by transportation equipment, wholesale trade and insurance issues.
