TRIPOLI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A new mayor was appointed for the Libyan city of Sirte on Monday, a week after government forces announced that they have flushed the Islamic State (IS) militants out of the city.

Al-Ma'madani, the new mayor, said the municipality has plans for the reconstruction of Sirte and will help displaced refugees return home.

In addition, a local bank in Sirte reopened on Monday after more than a year of closure.

Last week, the government forces announced that they had took over the entire city of Sirte from IS after nearly seven months of fighting.

Sirte, the hometown of former leader Muammar Gaddafi who was toppled in the 2011 uprising, had been dominated by IS for more than a year until UN-backed government forces launched a military offensive on the city in May. Enditem
