Indonesia's quake forces over 65,000 people displaced

JAKARTA, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The number of internally displaced-person after Wednesday's strong quake hit Aceh province of western Indonesia has climbed over 65,000 as the catastrophe has damaged around 18,000 houses and buildings, an official of disaster agency revealed on Sunday.

On Friday, the provincial disaster agency said nearly 11,000 displaced persons recorded, said Heni Nurmaini, press officer at provincial disaster agency.

"That was the latest figure. Most of these evacuees take shelters in makeshift tents along the streets across Pidie Jaya district," she told Xinhua by phone.

Emergency relief aids have been received by the affected-persons, including tents, Nurmaini said.

Scores of other aids are still on the way to the quake-hit areas in the districts of Pidie Jaya, Pidie and Bireun, she added.

The 6.4-magnitude quake struck the province with the depths 10 km, leaving at least 100 people dead and over 700 others injured with massive destruction, according to the national disaster management agency.
