France to cement ties with African allies to combat terrorism: minister

PARIS, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve on Tuesday vowed to further strengthen security cooperation and better coordinate efforts to fight terrorism.

"We reaffirmed our commitment to fight with total determination against jihadist terrorism," Cazeneuve said after meeting his counterparts from 11 African countries.

"We will continue to cooperate closely to prevent and detect radicalization at an early stage and to better combat terrorist propaganda by developing targeted and easily accessible counter-propaganda campaigns," he pledged.

Earlier on Tuesday, the French minister met his counterparts from Benin, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Togo to hammer out "a strategy of reinforced cooperation" to face "new challenges of terrorism fight in Africa."

Following the Paris meeting, participants agreed to bolster operational cooperation and improve the exchange of information between intelligence and police services in addition to having more joint field exercises.

The ministers also decided to better control borders and coordinate acts relating to counter-propaganda campaigns to better combat jihadist propaganda which targets young and fragile people.

Since Aug. 1, 2014, France has launched the Barkhane mission carried out by the French army and forces of the Sahel region states to fight against terrorist groups.
