KABUL, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 27 people were killed and 35 others wounded after a suicide bombing ripped through a Shiite mosque in the western part of Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, on Monday, police said.

The attack occurred at around 12:20 p.m. (local time) when the bomber detonated his explosive vest inside Baqir-ul-Ulum Mosque along Faiz Mohammad Kateb road when Shiite Muslim worshipers were holding a religious procession there, witness Mahmood Ullah told Xinhua.

"The initial information found that 27 people were killed and some 35 others were injured," Faridoon Obaidi, head of criminal investigation department of Kabul police, told reporters near the site.

Details about the incident will be released later in the day and the death toll may further go up as several injured were in critical condition, the police official added.

The witness said there were about 300 people inside the building when the attack occurred and the blast also severely damaged the mosque.

Among the injured were several women and children as they were sitting in a second-floor balcony surrounding the main hall of the mosque.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

More than 2,560 civilians were killed and over 5,830 injured in the first nine months of this year in conflict-related incidents across Afghanistan, according to the figures released by UN mission in the country.
