NEW DELHI, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- India on Thursday deported 10 illegal Bangladeshi nationals who were lodged in a jail in the northeastern state of Assam.

"The 10 Bangladeshis, including two children, were deported to their country through the Kalibari ghat port in the state's Karimganj district on the Indo-Bangladesh border," a police official said, adding that the decision to deport the Bangladeshis was taken by the Indian Home Ministry.

India and Bangladesh share a 4,143-km border. And more than half the estimated Bangladeshi immigrants in India live in Assam or the eastern state of West Bengal.

Deporting illegal Bangladeshi immigrants has always been a part of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's agenda and in one of his pre-election rallies in West Bengal, Modi had said that illegal Bangladeshis would be deported if his party came to power in 2014 general elections.

Some reports suggest that there are about 20 million Bangladeshi immigrants in India at present, but there are no reliable figures.
