YANGON, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar government has enacted a law revoking the 66-year-old Emergency Provisions Act and the law was signed by President U Htin Kyaw, official report said Wednesday.

The government's enactment of the law on Tuesday followed the approval of the bill by the parliament in late September.

The colonial-era Emergency Provisions Act was promulgated in 1950 when domestic conflicts emerged along with the country's independence.

Although it was applied for military purposes, it was often used for political purposes later to quell dissent.

Moreover, it contravened the constitutional rights of a citizen, according to the Lower House Bill Committee which submitted the bill repealing the act to the parliament in August.
