French consumer confidence index slightly up in August

PARIS, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- French consumer sentiment rose slightly in August, with the consumer confidence index going up by one point month-on-month to 97, according to data released Friday by the national statistics institute Insee.

There was less optimism over making major purchases in the coming months as the indicator declined by three points to minus 11 from July, according to the monthly economic survey.

Consumer sentiment about the future economy weakened with the corresponding index losing 4 points to reach minus 35.

More French consumers feared an increase in unemployment with the index growing 8 points, according to Insee data.

France, the eurozone's second largest economy, targets to increase growth by 1.5 percent in 2016 and bring down the unemployment rate currently at 9.9 percent.
