TOKYO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks retreated Wednesday morning as a slump on overseas bourses coupled with the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar soured the market mood.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 141.48 points, or 0.86 percent, from Tuesday to 16,249.97.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 18.10 points, or 1.39 percent, to 1,282.10.
Notable issues that declined by the morning break comprised brokerage, bank and utility-linked stocks.
