NAY PYI TAW, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 2,229 people were killed by road accidents across Myanmar in the first half of 2016, according to Myanmar Police Force Thursday.
Police Lt-Colonel Ye Khaing from Nay Pyi Taw Traffic Police Office said that 12,018 people were also injured in connection with 7,348 cases of car accidents during the six-month period.
In May alone, a total of 387 people died due to the accidents with Yangon region rated as the highest in car accident cases during the month, followed by Bago region.
The accidents were attributed to weakness in observing traffic rules by drivers, the police said, stressing the need to educate drivers before taking action on them.
In 2015, there were 15,406 road accident cases, in which 4,233 people were killed with 25,614 people injured.
