MONTEVIDEO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay's 1-0 loss to Venezuela at the 2016 Centennial Copa America caused pain and disappointment for fans, international media reported on Friday.

Uruguayan press said the defeat in the match held Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, United States, was a historic slap in the face.

Daily La Republica said "Uruguay played bad soccer and said good-bye to the Copa America," adding that the national squad will not win their 16th title, which they had aimed to do.

It was Uruguay's second defeat of the tournament after 3-1 loss to Mexico in the opening match. With these results, Uruguay was eliminated from the regional tournament, which is "a resounding sports failure," said La Republica.

The daily added that "they did not have any idea." The team had only one dangerous play during the first half of the match against Venezuela.

Daily El Pais said the match was disappointing because Uruguay will have to leave Copa America "with more pity than glory."

Luis Suarez's was one of the main causes of Uruguay's poor performance, according to El Pais.

"There are no excuses, the team did not work and they will have to leave. The elimination is done," El Pais said. Enditem
